NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Piccolo XS review

NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® Piccolo XS review

I never thought I'd buy a capsule coffee machine maker, because it sounded like too much responsibility. To keep using the machine, you need to keep buying coffee capsules, right? And then eventually if you use the coffee machine too much you need to descale it, right? Hmmm.

Then the Movement Control Order happened and suddenly I had no access to a hot cup of regular Starbucks Caramel Macchiato for 4 weeks. In my moment of darkness, a senior told me how the Nescafe Starbucks caramel macchiato capsules taste like the real thing ... so I ordered my machine and coffee capsules and waited patiently while Lazada took 10 days to deliver my machine.

Setting up was easy! If you get stuck, do send me a direct message via Instagram. Setting up and rinsing the machine probably took less than 10 minutes.

This coffee is really manual. There's basically just a switch to turn on and off the hot water flow. Anyone can learn how to use this easily.

I rinse the used capsules and chuck them in a jar. If you just throw them straightaway into a plastic bag, the liquid will collect in the trash which is kinda gross...

We also have a RM1 Arissto coffee machine in the office and this one is much easier to clean, all you need to do is let the hot water flow for a few minutes and you're done. I may actually return the Arissto coffee machine since the Nescafe dolce machine is much easier to clean yet you can create more beverage options.

Adjusting the flavour

All Nescafe Dulco capsules come with recommendations on how much water you should add to craft your drink, but the machine itself only comes with an ON/OFF switch. When I first found out about it I panicked, thinking there's no way I can estimate how much milk and coffee to put in my drink.

To solve this problem, all you need to do is download Dolce Gusto Timer on your phone, it's completely free and the interface looks like this:

Economics and Calories

Guys, suddenly having artisan-made coffee is so much more convenient.

No more stressing out that the barista will spell your name wrongly and tell you that it's only RM1 extra to upgrade to a bigger cup.

No more hoping that the barista doesn't forget your order and accidentally puts whipped cream on your coffee.

One cup of Grande Starbucks Caramel Macchiato is 240 calories.
The Nescafe Dolce version only has 74 calories. Even on most days when I drink two cups, it's only 148 calories. So, no more feeling guilty about having my caramel macchiato!

One cup of Grande Starbucks Caramel Macchiato is about RM16 now.
The Nescafe Dolce version is only RM5. If I drink two cups, that's RM10 so I still save RM6.

TLDR; Nescafe Dolce version is kinder on your waist and wallet.

If you're a coffee addict like me, then this is actually a good machine to get. Having a cup of coffee (or two) followed by a hot green tea latte later in the day has become a reward for me as I go about the house accomplishing tasks.

(But also I will try to update this blog when I come across maintenance duty for this machine. Hopefully it is just as easy)

As requested, here's what I use to store the coffee capsules:

I bought this drawer for RM49.90 from Shopee. I also got a capsule tower where I keep my caramel macchiato cups because I use that everyday, I spent RM32.80 bought from Lazada.
